This week we’re in our second half of our Journey Into the Dark…ness that is Bakshi’s 1978 animated adaptation of Lord of the Rings.
Prepare to enter the Land of Shadow.
(Yes I am adding as many chapter titles as I can into this entry, sue me.)
Now that you’ve been fully educated and prepped with all the information you could possibly need about the Lord of the Rings books, author, and Ralph Bakshi himself, let’s get to this movie!
Sarrah kicks things off with some of the issues Bakshi faced trying to make this movie (it involves Spain and a helicopter), and his passionate love for rotoscoping. You’ll also learn very quickly how we feel about this stylistic decision.
Apparently, this is what the actors looked like while filming
Aly takes us over to Voice Cast Corner where we learn that some very impressive actors worked on this project and a Star Wars alumni! Not that he isn’t impressive. We have a bit of a fan-girl moment over John Hurt.
Our walkthrough is pretty vicious this week. Apologies to those who like this film, it’s not our thing. If it IS your thing, cool! But we were not fans. At all. Dear God. We discuss the evils of rotoscoping, how apparently Sam and Frodo will always have chemistry, and how short Aragorn’s skirt was!
We also talk about WHAT WAS UP WITH SAM'S CHARACTER DESIGN?????
So sit back, relax, and keep on walking towards certain doom until we break our fellowship.
